Assessment of Complex Masonry Structures with GPR Compared to Other Non-Destructive Testing Studies

چکیده
Columns are one of the most usual supporting structures in a large number of cultural heritage buildings. However, it is difficult to obtain accurate information about their inner structure. Non-destructive testing (NDT) methodologies are usually applied, but results depend on the complexity of the column. Non-flat external surfaces and unknown and irregular internal materials complicate the interpretation of data. This work presents the study of one column by using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) combined with seismic tomography, under laboratory conditions, in order to obtain the maximum information about the structure. This column belongs to a “Modernista” building from Barcelona (Spain). These columns are built with irregular and fragmented clay bricks and mortar. The internal irregular and complex structure causes complicated 2D images, evidencing the existence of many different targets. However, 3D images provide valuable information about the presence and the state of an internal tube and show, in addition, that the column is made of uneven and broken bricks. GPR images present high correlation with seismic data and endoscopy observation carried out in situ. In conclusion, the final result of the study provides information and 3D images of damaged areas and inner structures. Comparing the different methods to the real structure of the column, the potential and limitations of GPR were evaluated. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2014, 6 8221

Force Reduction Factor R for Shear Dominated Low-Rise Brick Masonry Structures
This paper presents investigation carried out, including experimental and numerical studies, on low-rise shear-dominated brick masonry structures for the calculation of force reduction factor R. Basic experimental tests were conducted on masonry constituent materials for mechancial characterization. In-plane quasi-static cyclic tests were conducted on twelve full scale brick masonry walls, to u...
متن کاملDetermining the Strength of Solid Burnt Bricks in Historical Structures
Burnt bricks lined with mortar were among the materials used in the construction of historical load-bearing structures. The need to know the strength characteristics of masonry material arises during repairs of historical structures and their subsequent static securing. These can be investigated either by sampling a masonry specimen, or the employment of non-destructive testing methods. With de...

Some specimens reproducing three leaf stone masonry walls frequently used in Italy, have been built at DIS, Milan, using two different types of stones and tested under compression and shear, up to failure. Subsequently the damaged wallettes were repaired by injection and the effectiveness of the injection was controlled by several NDT (non destructive techniques)
متن کاملProcessing a multifold ground penetration radar data using common-diffraction-surface stack method
Recently, the non-destructive methods have become of interest to the scientists in various fields. One of these method is Ground Penetration Radar (GPR), which can provide a valuable information from underground structures in a friendly environment and cost-effective way. To increase the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the GPR data, multi-fold acquisition is performed, and the Common-Mid-Points ...
متن کاملDeveloping a Feature Extraction of Existing Structures Using an Ambient Vibration Test
The paper aims to extract the dynamic properties of existing structures without utilizing the analytical models. The ambient vibration testing could be used on any type of frame such as concrete, steel and masonry to investigate the structural vulnerability. The method could be the first stage and necessarily for the retrofit process. To achieve this aim, the ambient vibration testing can...
